I again dared to turn on the Sunday morning talk shows. Meet the Press is being recorded currently so I can’t comment on that just yet, so I again return to the “tell me something I don’t know” feature of the Chris Matthews show.
3rd thing Matthews got to learn was from Erin Burnett who is most famous for suggesting we should be careful what we wish for when wishing for Chinese toys to stop poisoning our children. Burnett informed Matthews that while many Americans are afraid of globalization, only 2% of jobs lost are lost to foreign competition, and globalization has lots of benefits for the American economy. She goes on to tell us that there is a Kentucky Fried Chicken store opening every day in China. Matthews responds with something about how people still don’t like globalization, to which Burnett suggests there should be a movement or something to convince people of the rightness of globalization.
Don’t even know where to start. The 2% of jobs lost, doesn’t actually tell us anything about if globalization is good the American economy. Terrorism kills why less then 2% of people that die in a given year, but that doesn’t mean terrorism isn’t bad for mortality rates. It’s fairly stupid to think what’s good for G.E. is good for America, but it’s just bizarre to think what’s good for KFC is a good proxy for what’s good for America. Almost as bizarre as implying that globalization is in serious need of advocates.
Burnett works on a network full of knee jerk advocates for global capitalism. Both the Washington Post and New York Times routinely publish columns that trash anti-globalization protests. Pro-globalization advocates dominate both television and print media and they have for a long time.
