Out the Door

So a friend of mine was giving some horror stories from his last job that mostly revolved around wanting him to work in excess of 60 hours a week. (Basically hours in excess of everyone around him)It seemed pretty obvious that they just trying to get rid of him, and had no particular problems with his hours. Anyway their problem with him was basically that he wasn’t a CPA and new management wanted one for that position, which got me thinking.

While I’m usually in line with the idea that government would be better off helping people outside of the workplace beyond basic discrimination and harassment laws (the Nordic model rather then the Continental European model of Capitalism), it certainly seems to violate some basic element of fairness to fire someone for not having skills that you didn’t require them to have a few months earlier when you hired them. I guess in effect it’s not that different from being fired because sales projections went down unexpectedly, but covertly changing job requirements as means railroading someone seems across the line and you hear stories like that all the time.
