Here is a link to a Jubilee USA-Blog the Debt Post about Nancy Birdsall and Steve Radelet of the Center for Global Development calling for a cabinet level post for Global Development. Here is a excerpt that Jubilee used to explain the issue.
“We hope that our next President will believe, as we do, that investing in global development is an investment in America’s future — strengthening its security, its economic opportunities, and its moral values. And that establishing a Department of Global Development to manage our foreign assistance — both bilateral and multilateral — and other development policy instruments would streamline the currently fragmented bureaucracy, reduce duplication, strengthen our ability to align major programs with our key objectives, and leverage U.S. dollars and influence to get results.
It seems like a good idea, the foreign aid community doesn’t really have a focal point and it would help to have a person to get everybody on the same page. Also I think it’s a reminder of what the world would be like if there was a democratic administration. Democrats haven’t meet a problem that doesn’t need a cabinet figure to talk to the media about all the good work they’re doing to solve the problem
P.S. I am also a big fan of influential people proposing a cabinet level position be created that they would be a leading candidate get appointed to.
