Worst. President(s). Ever.

Like all good liberals I hate America so in honor of President’s day I thought I would put together a list of which presidents would be on the Mount Rushmore if they put the worst instead of the best.   

  • Warren Harding- Usually sits atop of historians list of worst presidents for his corruption, misguided foreign policy, and alleged personal ties to the KKK. Personally I not very familiar with this period of history, but he seems worthy of a spot.
  • James Buchanan-Sometimes is ranked as the worst president ever for doing nothing positive in the run up to the civil war. Certainly his administration was worse for America then Harding’s administration, but Harding’s misdeeds to be more a direct reflection of his own leadership, then simply making bad decisions in the face of a difficult situation
  • Andrew Johnson-played quite the negative role in civil rights history during the reconstruction era, and generally did his best to undermine the progressive efforts of the Radical Republicans. 
  • George W. Bush- Recently several historians have suggested that Bush will be come to known as the worst president ever.  Personally I doubt this (too many other bad presidents), but everybody that’s expecting Iraq to turn things around and save Bush’s historical legacy is going to be sadly mistaken. 

That’s what I came up, wikipedia has good page on historical rankings of presidents. As you’ll see I’m clearly some sort of Franklin Pierce apologist.  Who would you put on this list?

    Worst Presidents:
    Carter
    Buchanan
    A Johnson
    F Roosevelt (his foolhardy fumbling deepened the depression for 7 years, then was bamboozled by Stalin re the Pacific War and in eastern Europe.)

    1) FDR was one of the greatest presidents of ALL time: he got us out of the depression!!! that was like IMPOSSIBLE!!!

    2) Andrew Johnson was a racist asshole!!!! and a TERRIBLE president

    3) Bush destroyed our: reputation, economy, LIVES!!! how do u think hes a good president?? he is deffinately in the top 5 worst

    I think it’s people like you that make me hate FDR and the like. While certainly not the WORST president ever, he was certainly not the best. I agree with the assertions here in this blog. He was a good public man and held together the presidency even from a wheelchair, and made people feel good about America during the crisis, but his politics were mean-spirited towards TR when he ran, and he wanted war with Europe, a dangerous proposition. A good and bad president, but certainly not a god like many try to make him out as. As for Johnson, again, while not a great president, wasn’t wonderful. A man of the times during reconstruction he would appear to be a racist today, but it was common back then. And what about Wilson’s segregation of Washington DC and federal positions? That doesn’t often get mentioned. And Bush, don’t even get me started. Far to right-wing for my tastes and a terrible president based on public opinion, foreign opinion, and the war. This is all just MHO.
