Outside the Beltway
So once again I know a bunch of people leaving Washington DC for the holidays. Washington DC is unique in that most of the population is from somewhere else, this particularly so among whites. Fully two thirds the city’s sports fans rout for non local sports teams. I’ve noticed particularly among the older, more successful folks I know a tendency to view leaving DC as some sort of sanity saving episode. Gotta get away from the douche bags in this city.
While I certainly understand the felling, there’s bit of paradox since the douche bags aren’t DC natives either. Much like the worst tyrants of history aren’t from the country they eventually came to dominate, the people that cast the longest shadows and influence the culture of DC aren’t from here. You’ll end standing in line with them at the airport.
George W. Bush can’t stand being in DC, probably too many phony people for his liking.
