This is post over at Gristmill makes some really good points about ethanol. However, I think this line is indicative of a common but misleading school of thought. (emphasis added)
A professor from Iowa State University — ground zero of ethanol fervor — has broken ranks and issued a scathing, cogent critique [PDF] of of the ethanol program.
Actually I think it’s fairly frequent to see the most fervent critiques of a policy originate from otherwise friendly turf. I remember a UNLV professor writing a paper about how the casinos weren’t good for the economy of Las Vegas.
Basically there are only so many people studying ethanol and many of them are in Iowa and other corn producing states. I guess there is an issue with departmental politics and funding sources, but everywhere has factions in favor of all sorts of things. Professors aren’t Presidential candidates, at least a few of them should be expected to get this issue right.
Regardless ethanol sucks.
