It was clear that John McCain was in good cop mode during his appearance on Meet the Press, but I couldn’t help notice the speed with which he transitioned from bitching about the budget situation, to endorsing the indefinite deployment of troops in Afghanistan.
It’s rare see to quite such a quick transition from calls [...]

Certain

Here’s Matthew Yglesias a little while ago on why Obama’s lead in the presidential election isn’t like Al Franken’s lead in the Minnesota Senate race.
Obama’s up by too much. Plus, the Electoral College seems to favor him. On top of that, any errors in likely voter models are overwhelmingly likely to favor Obama. And many [...]

Trendy

Here I had been thinking that the McCain campaign could not possibly become anymore irrational.
But here comes the Rashid Khalidi who Barack Obama is supposed to apologize for knowing or something. Not only is the central claim that Rashid Khalidi an Anti-Semite false, but it’s not really clear that Barack Obama is more connected to [...]

60s Amnesty

24Oct08

A few weeks ago I remember Atrios joking that every 4 years for eternity he’ll be saying that this election is the last one that will be re-fighting the battles of the 60s.
I’m definitely with him on thinking that both 2004 and 2008 would have seemed like good chances to have an election with not [...]

John Lewis

John Lewis Civil Rights leader.
Representative to the United States Congress John Lewis.
Organizer of the March on Washington, with Marin Luther King Jr.
John Lewis who edited criticism of the federal government from his speech delivered during the march on Washington.
John Lewis who according to anybody with an ounce of [...]

Memo to John McCain:
It’s absurd to be talking about how awesome the 1983 Social Security reforms were, because they were “bipartisan”, when they included tax increases you won’t support to fix the problem now.
Also if the 1983 Social Security compromise was such a great fix why do we still need to fix social security? [...]

My standing theory is McCain’s healthcare plan is the single biggest unexploited liability in this campaign. John McCain’s healthcare plan would create a huge tax increase on people that get their insurance their jobs. Let me repeat the key part of that: John McCain’s health care plan would create a huge tax increase.
No matter [...]

Anyone else notice that when Sarah Palin says ‘America’ she doesn’t pronounce it like more then 99 percent of Americans do. The very name of our country sounds foreign coming out of her mouth. Nothing profound in this regard, but it seems notable.

So McCain can’t be bothered to actually read the Hank Paulson proposal to spend 700 Billions dollars.

Commence countdown to Republican hack saying, “Do you know where else he wasn’t reading legislative proposals?”

Over at Matthew Yglesias’s blog you can read all about how Bush lobbied the Iraqi government to delay the withdrawal date to help John McCain.
Hey, nothing wrong with getting U.S. soldiers killed to help your political allies right? OK, it’s possibly the despicable thing the Bush administration has ever done, and that’s saying something. [...]

So the big debate seems to be how quickly Congress needs to act on the financial crisis. Here’s a suggestion as to why Hank Paulson wants Congress to act now, now, now.
He wants to help McCain win the election.
The longer the debate goes, the more of a problem it is for McCain right?

I saw Ron Paul won’t be endorsing John McCain. I’m surprised the McCain people even bothered to ask.
I mean Ron Paul foreign policy is about as opposite of John McCain’s as possible. More importantly Ron Paul’s whole thing is being an outsider. He’d be irrelevant if he were just another Republican willing to fall [...]

So today’s follow up to the ‘lipstick’ story seems to be asking if Barack Obama was tough enough in responding to it. There are so many misleading things about this frame, it hard to know where to start but here it goes:
1. Saying a candidate didn’t handle the attacks well enough and therefore isn’t tough [...]

-Senator Barbara Boxer on Sarah Palin via MSNBC
Sounds about right.

A quick follow up the experience post. Another weird talking point is that Barack Obama doesn’t have executive experience. This falls apart when think about the nature of John McCain’s experience advantage. John McCain has the exact same type of experience as Barack Obama. It’s the extent of that their experience is different the main [...]

Joe Klein on the Chris Matthews is making a lot of sense on John McCain’s speech.
Main point is that John McCain’s speech was successful in that he really came off as a normal person. Which is something I had been meaning to write. It was the first time in a while that I watched [...]

I’d been meaning to write about what John McCain and other Republicans saying that they think it’s great that the Democratic party nominated an African American. While the basic line that it’s a positive development in the history of race relations in America is correct, I think when you think when you think about context [...]

There’s been some really interesting stuff over at The Monkey Cage in the last few days about Sarah Palin and women candidates. Phil Klinkner highlighted polling that showed that more Americans thought Dan Quayle was ready to president then Sarah Palin, which is pretty amusing.
Andrew Gelman had quick post just saying that there’s [...]

Nothing says progress like tokenism …

Last night a friend of mine told me go to Daily Kos to check out posts about how Sarah Palin covered up for her daughter’s pregnancy by pretending to be pregnant herself. When I got there all I found was a bunch of scolds telling diarists to shut up with their wacky conspiracy theories. (Certainly [...]
